What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Leuven?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Leuven about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to understand that healthcare in Belgium is of a high standard, so you can expect good prenatal and postnatal care. You should register your pregnancy with your local commune as soon as possible. This will ensure that you receive all the necessary support and benefits. Belgium has a system of mandatory health insurance, so make sure you are fully covered. This insurance will cover most of the costs associated with pregnancy and childbirth. You will need to choose a hospital or a midwife for your delivery. In Leuven, the University Hospital is a popular choice for many expats. Consider taking prenatal classes. These are a great way to prepare for childbirth and to meet other expectant parents in Leuven. If you don't speak Dutch or French, look for doctors and midwives who speak English. Many healthcare professionals in Belgium are multilingual. After the birth, you will need to register your baby at the local town hall within 15 days. This is a legal requirement in Belgium. Consider hiring a kraamzorg, a maternity assistant who can help with the baby and light household tasks in the first days after the birth. This service is partially covered by health insurance. Finally, connect with other expat parents in Leuven. They can provide valuable advice and support, and help you navigate the Belgian healthcare system," wrote a member who made the move to Leuven, Belgium.
