What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Puerto Cortes?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Puerto Cortes about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Honduras. While there are public and private hospitals available, the quality of care can vary greatly. It's recommended to have a reliable health insurance that covers maternity costs. Secondly, consider hiring a local doula or midwife who can guide you through the process and help you navigate the local healthcare system. They can also provide valuable support during labor and delivery. Thirdly, ensure you have all necessary documents for your baby, such as a birth certificate. This can be a complex process in Honduras, so it's advisable to seek legal advice or assistance. Fourthly, be aware of the local customs and traditions related to childbirth. In Honduras, it's common for the entire family to be involved in the process, which can be overwhelming for some expats. Fifthly, make sure you have a strong support network. This can be other expat families, local friends, or family members who can provide emotional and practical support. Lastly, learn Spanish if you haven't already. While some doctors and nurses may speak English, many will not. Being able to communicate effectively in Spanish will make the entire process much easier," wrote a member who made the move to Puerto Cortes, Honduras.
