What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Medina?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Medina about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saudi Arabia. The country has both public and private healthcare sectors, with the private sector often offering a higher standard of care. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Many employers in Saudi Arabia provide health insurance as part of their employment package, but it's crucial to check what this covers. Choose a hospital or clinic that you feel comfortable with. It's recommended to visit a few different places before making a decision. Consider factors such as the facilities, the attitude of the staff, and the language skills of the doctors and nurses. Understand the cultural norms and laws in Saudi Arabia. For example, women are required to wear an abaya in public places, and it's illegal for unmarried couples to live together. Find a support network. This could be other expats who have had a baby in Medina, or local women who can offer advice and support. Learn some basic Arabic phrases. While many doctors and nurses in Saudi Arabia speak English, it can be helpful to know some Arabic, particularly in an emergency situation. Prepare for the birth by attending prenatal classes, if available. These can provide valuable information about what to expect during labor and delivery, as well as postnatal care. Finally, be aware that the process for registering the birth and obtaining a birth certificate for your baby can be complex in Saudi Arabia. It's advisable to research this in advance and seek advice from your embassy if necessary," wrote a member who made the move to Medina, Saudi Arabia.
