We asked people in Khor Fakkan if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Khor Fakkan, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are considered inappropriate and disrespectful. Dress modestly, especially in public places, to respect the local culture. Women should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts. Avoid using your left hand for eating or passing objects, as it is considered unclean in Arab culture. Also, avoid pointing your feet or shoes at someone, as it is considered disrespectful. Do not consume alcohol in public places, as it is illegal and can lead to severe penalties. Also, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during the holy month of Ramadan, as it is considered disrespectful. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or sex, as these are considered private matters. Also, avoid criticizing or making negative comments about the UAE, its rulers, or its culture, as it is considered disrespectful and can lead to legal consequences. Do not take photographs of people, especially women, without their permission. It is also illegal to take photographs of certain government buildings, military installations, and other sensitive areas. Avoid making loud noises or causing disturbances, especially during prayer times. The UAE is a Muslim country, and respect for prayer times is important. Finally, always remember to show respect and courtesy to the local people and their customs and traditions. This will not only help you avoid any cultural faux pas, but also enhance your experience in Khor Fakkan, UAE," remarked another expat who made the move to Khor Fakkan, the UAE.
