What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Kato Paphos?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Kato Paphos if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Kato Paphos, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid making any negative comments about the country, its people, or its history, as Cypriots are very proud of their heritage. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly and behave respectfully. Women should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should avoid wearing shorts. Avoid discussing the political situation in Cyprus, particularly the division of the island between the Greek Cypriot south and the Turkish Cypriot north. This is a sensitive topic and can lead to heated debates. In Cyprus, it's considered rude to point with your finger. Instead, use your whole hand to gesture. Don't refuse food or drink offered to you, as this can be seen as disrespectful. Cypriots are known for their hospitality and it's common to be offered food and drink when visiting someone's home. Avoid being loud or disruptive in public places. Cypriots value peace and quiet, and excessive noise can be seen as disrespectful. Finally, remember to tip in restaurants and cafes. While it's not mandatory, it's customary to leave a tip of around 10% if you're happy with the service," remarked another expat in Kato Paphos, Cyprus.
