What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Oroklini?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Oroklini if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Oroklini, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid making negative comments about the country, its people, or its history, as Cypriots are very proud of their heritage. It's considered rude to refuse food or drink when offered by a host. Always accept with a thank you, even if you're not hungry or thirsty. Avoid discussing the political situation, particularly the division of the island between the Greek Cypriot south and the Turkish Cypriot north. This is a sensitive topic and can lead to heated debates. When visiting churches or monasteries, dress modestly. Women should cover their shoulders and knees, and men should not wear shorts. Don't take photos of military installations or personnel. This can be seen as a security threat and can lead to serious consequences. Avoid being loud or disruptive, especially in public places. Cypriots value peace and quiet, and excessive noise can be seen as disrespectful. Don't litter. Cypriots take pride in their clean and beautiful environment, and littering is frowned upon. Avoid being overly affectionate in public. Public displays of affection are not common in Cyprus and can make people uncomfortable. Remember to tip. In Cyprus, it's customary to leave a tip of around 10% in restaurants and cafes. Finally, always greet people with a smile and a friendly "hello". Cypriots are known for their hospitality and friendliness, and a warm greeting is always appreciated," commented one expat who made the move to Oroklini, Cyprus.
