What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Tequisquiapan?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Tequisquiapan if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"Yes. I was speaking with a bi-lingual Mexican man and I told him that I was very happy because people here must think I am Mexican. He asked me why I felt that way. I said "Well..everyone freely and openly just start speaking to me in Spanish, so they must think I'm Mexican". He looked at me with a smile and said "That's because they don't know how to speak English" Oh boy, did I feel silly....we had a really good laugh at that one," remarked another expat who made the move to Tequisquiapan, Mexico.

"It is important to show respect when visiting Tequisquiapan by avoiding making any cultural faux pas. For example, avoid wearing revealing clothing in public and always be mindful of local customs and codes of behavior, such as avoiding verbal or physical displays of affection in public. Additionally, attempt to learn at least basic Spanish phrases and use respectful language when interacting with locals. Furthermore, it is important to be mindful of local cultural beliefs, such as being aware of how the people may view some western customs or behaviors. Finally, always be conscious of local etiquette, such as understanding and refraining from behaviors that may be seen as inappropriate," explained one expat living in Tequisquiapan, Mexico.
