What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Las Galeras. They wrote...

"Expats in Las Galeras, Dominican Republic often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Spanish is the primary language spoken and not everyone is fluent in English. The laid-back, slower pace of life, known as "island time", can also be a challenge for those accustomed to a more fast-paced, punctual lifestyle. Additionally, the local customs and social norms can be difficult to navigate for newcomers, such as the importance of personal relationships in business dealings. The lack of certain amenities and services that they might be used to in their home countries can also be a challenge. Lastly, dealing with the local bureaucracy and legal system, which can be complex and time-consuming, is often cited as a significant challenge by expats," said another expat in Las Galeras, the Dominican Republic.
