What do I need to know before retiring in Las Lajas?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Las Lajas, they said...

"Expats considering retirement in Las Lajas should be aware that the cost of living is generally lower than in many Western countries, but it's still important to budget carefully. The official currency is the US dollar, which can make financial transactions easier for American retirees. Spanish is the official language, so learning some basic Spanish would be beneficial, although many locals and expats speak English. Healthcare in Panama is of a high standard, with many doctors trained in the US or Europe, but it's advisable to have comprehensive health insurance. The climate in Las Lajas is tropical, with a wet and dry season, and it can be quite hot and humid. The area is known for its beautiful beaches and natural beauty, offering plenty of outdoor activities. However, it's less developed than some other parts of Panama, which can mean fewer amenities and services. Panama has a friendly attitude towards expats and offers a Pensionado visa program, which provides several benefits for retirees. However, it's important to understand the legal requirements and process for obtaining residency. Public transportation is available but not always reliable, so having a personal vehicle can be beneficial. Finally, it's important to understand that while Panama is generally safe, crime can be an issue, particularly petty theft, so it's important to take standard precautions," commented one expat who made the move to Las Lajas, Panama.
