What should I pack when moving to Lake Atitlan?
We asked people living in Lake Atitlan to list three things they wish they had brought and three they wish they had left behind. They responded...
"When moving to Lake Atitlan, you should pack lightweight and breathable clothing, as the climate is generally warm and humid. Include a mix of short-sleeve shirts, long-sleeve shirts, shorts, and long pants to accommodate varying temperatures and activities. Don't forget a swimsuit for enjoying the lake and a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. Pack comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, as well as sandals or flip-flops for more casual outings. A hat and sunglasses will help protect you from the sun, and a reusable water bottle will keep you hydrated during your adventures. Bring along any necessary prescription medications, as well as a basic first aid kit with items like band-aids, pain relievers, and any over-the-counter medications you may need. It's also a good idea to pack insect repellent and sunscreen to protect yourself from mosquitoes and sunburn. Make sure to have your passport, driver's license, and any other important identification documents, as well as photocopies of these items in case they get lost or stolen. You should also bring any necessary travel documents, such as visas or proof of vaccinations. Pack a travel adapter and any necessary chargers for your electronic devices, as the electrical outlets in Guatemala may be different from those in your home country. A portable power bank can also be helpful for keeping your devices charged while on the go. Bring a small amount of local currency (Guatemalan Quetzals) for immediate expenses upon arrival, as well as a credit or debit card that works internationally for larger purchases and emergencies. Consider packing a Spanish-English dictionary or phrasebook, as English may not be widely spoken in the area. A guidebook or map of Lake Atitlan and the surrounding region can also be helpful for planning activities and navigating your new surroundings. Finally, pack any personal items and toiletries that you use daily, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and soap. While many of these items can be purchased locally, it's always nice to have your preferred brands and products on hand when you first arrive," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
"Clothing for cold and warm weather, sturdy walking shoes, bug repellent and sunscreen for outdoor activities, a flashlight and batteries, a first aid kit, a hat and sunglasses, a laptop, a copy of important documents, and a water filter," commented one expat who made the move to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
