How do I find a place to live in Phnom Penh?

Answer this Question

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered...

"Finding a place to live in Phnom Penh, involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget and the type of accommodation you're looking for. This could range from a simple room in a shared apartment to a luxury condo or a standalone house. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Phnom Penh to find one that suits your lifestyle and needs. Some popular areas for expats include BKK1, Riverside, and Russian Market. Each of these areas has its own unique vibe and amenities, so it's worth visiting them in person to get a feel for the local atmosphere. Once you've narrowed down your search to a few potential neighborhoods, you can start looking for specific properties. There are several ways to do this. One option is to use online property portals like Realestate.com.kh or Khmer24. These websites have listings for a wide range of properties all over Phnom Penh, and you can filter the results based on your preferences. Another option is to hire a local real estate agent. They can help you navigate the local property market, arrange viewings, and negotiate with landlords. You can find real estate agents through online directories or by asking for recommendations from other expats. When you find a property you're interested in, make sure to inspect it thoroughly before signing any contracts. Check for any signs of damage or disrepair, and ask about the terms of the lease. It's also a good idea to talk to the neighbors or other tenants to get a sense of what it's like to live there. Finally, once you've found a place you're happy with, you'll need to sign a lease and pay a deposit. The standard lease term in Cambodia is one year, and the deposit is usually equivalent to one or two months' rent. Make sure to get a receipt for your deposit, and keep a copy of the signed lease for your records," wrote a member who made the move to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
