What do I need to know before moving to Valle de Los Chillos?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Valle de Los Chillos, they said...

"Valle de Los Chillos, Ecuador is a valley located just east of Quito, offering a more relaxed lifestyle compared to the bustling city. The area is known for its pleasant climate, with temperatures typically ranging from 50 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The cost of living in Valle de Los Chillos is generally lower than in Quito, making it an attractive option for expats. Spanish is the official language of Ecuador, so it would be beneficial to learn some basic Spanish phrases before moving. However, English is also widely spoken in the larger cities and tourist areas. The local currency is the US dollar, which makes financial transactions easier for those from the United States. Public transportation is widely available and affordable in Valle de Los Chillos, with buses being the most common mode of transport. Taxis are also readily available and relatively inexpensive. However, driving can be challenging due to the country's mountainous terrain and different driving habits. Healthcare in Ecuador is generally of a good standard, with both public and private healthcare options available. It's advisable to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation, as some specialized treatments may not be available locally. Ecuadorian cuisine is diverse and delicious, with a focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood. Local specialties in Valle de Los Chillos include ceviche, empanadas, and locro de papa, a traditional potato soup. Ecuador uses a 120-volt electrical system, the same as the United States, so no adapters are needed for US appliances. However, the country is located on the equator, so the sun is very strong and it's important to protect your skin. Ecuador has a high level of seismic activity, so it's important to be prepared for earthquakes. The country also has strict laws on drug use and trafficking, with severe penalties for violations. Finally, it's important to respect local customs and traditions. Ecuadorians are generally warm and friendly, but they also value politeness and good manners. It's customary to greet people with a handshake and to say "Buenos días" (Good day) or "Buenas tardes" (Good afternoon) when entering shops or restaurants," wrote a member who made the move to Valle de Los Chillos , Ecuador.
