As a foreigner living in Pecs, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Pecs if they have access to public healthcare in Pecs. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Pecs, you will have access to public healthcare, provided you have a valid residence permit and you are covered by health insurance. The Hungarian healthcare system is funded by the Health Insurance Fund (HIF), to which contributions are made through taxes. The quality of healthcare in Hungary is generally good, with well-trained medical staff and modern facilities, especially in larger cities. However, the system can be bureaucratic and waiting times for non-emergency procedures can be long. In Pecs, the main healthcare facility is the Clinical Center of the University of Pecs, which offers a wide range of medical services. There are also numerous pharmacies, clinics, and smaller hospitals throughout the city. It's important to note that while emergency treatment is provided to everyone, regardless of their insurance status, for non-emergency treatment, you may be asked to provide proof of insurance. Most doctors and medical staff in Hungary speak English, especially in larger cities and in facilities that cater to foreigners. However, in smaller towns and rural areas, finding English-speaking healthcare providers can be more challenging. Prescription medication in Hungary is only available from pharmacies and can be more expensive than in other countries. Over-the-counter medication is widely available for minor ailments. Dental care in Hungary is not covered by the HIF and must be paid for privately. However, the cost of dental care is generally lower than in many other European countries, and the standard of care is high. Overall, while the Hungarian healthcare system has its challenges, as a foreigner living in Pecs, you should be able to access the care you need," wrote a member who made the move to Pecs, Hungary.
