As a foreigner living in Medan, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Medan if they have access to public healthcare in Medan. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Medan, you will have access to public healthcare, but it may not be up to the standards you are accustomed to in Western countries. The public healthcare system in Indonesia is generally underfunded and understaffed, leading to long wait times and a lack of specialized care. Many public hospitals in Medan are often crowded and the quality of care can be inconsistent. In addition, there may be language barriers as not all medical staff may be fluent in English. It's also important to note that public healthcare in Indonesia is not free, even for locals. While the costs are generally lower than in private hospitals, you will still be expected to pay for your treatment. Many expatriates and wealthier Indonesians prefer to use private healthcare facilities, which offer a higher standard of care but at a significantly higher cost. These private hospitals often have English-speaking staff and offer a wider range of services. It's highly recommended for foreigners living in Medan, or anywhere in Indonesia, to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation, as serious medical issues may require treatment in Singapore or another nearby country with more advanced medical facilities. In terms of pharmacies, they are widely available and stock a good range of over-the-counter and prescription medications. However, it's advisable to bring a sufficient supply of any prescription medications you may need, as the exact brand or type may not be available in Indonesia. Overall, while public healthcare is accessible in Medan, it's advisable to have health insurance and consider using private healthcare facilities for better quality care," commented one expat who made the move to Medan, Indonesia.
