What advice do you have for expats having a baby in France?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in France about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Make sure to familiarize yourself with the maternity healthcare and delivery options available in France. It is also important to research French maternity leave policies and parental leave benefits in advance so that you are adequately informed. Ensure that you get all the necessary documents in place for any paperwork pertaining to birth registration and family updates. Additionally, make sure to check expat support groups for information and advice from other parents who may have gone through the process that you are about to experience. Finally, don’t forget to enjoy this special time and savor the moments of your new addition no matter the language barriers you may face," said a member in France.

"Do take advantage of the full range of preparation options offered by French social security. Do have the monthly visits and ultrasounds, do check into your chosen hospital starting on the 4th month. Make sure you get your paperwork with social security in order. Do trust the midwives - they definitely know their stuff. Don't get hung up on the possible dangers and the guilt laid on you for gaining too much weight (in my case, 50 lbs. + for each baby, but I lost all of it afterwards and still fit into my "before kids" jeans at age 45!)," remarked another expat who made the move to La Rochelle, France.
