What do I need to know before moving to Turkmenistan?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Turkmenistan, they said...
"Turkmenistan is a country with a rich cultural heritage and a unique language. Expats should be aware that the official language is Turkmen, and although English is widely spoken in the capital city of Ashgabat, it is not as common in other parts of the country. Expats should also be aware that Turkmenistan is a predominantly Muslim country, and that religious practices and customs should be respected. Additionally, expats should be aware that the country has a very strict visa system, and that obtaining a visa can be a lengthy process. Finally, expats should be aware that the cost of living in Turkmenistan is relatively high, and that it is important to budget accordingly," said another expat in Turkmenistan.
"You will visit dozens of homes before finding one. You will rarely find something that you are used to if you are from the west. You will want to run out of some before even reaching the front door," wrote a member who made the move to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
