Are foreigners allowed to own property in Uruguay?

Answer this Question

When we asked expats in Uruguay if foreigners are allowed to own property, they answered...

"Yes, foreigners are allowed to own property in Uruguay. The country has a very open and welcoming attitude towards foreign investment, and the process of buying property is relatively straightforward. Foreigners are able to purchase property in their own name, and there are no restrictions on the type of property that can be purchased. The only requirement is that the property must be registered with the local government. Additionally, foreign investors are able to obtain mortgages from local banks, and there are no restrictions on the amount of money that can be borrowed," commented one expat who made the move to Uruguay.

"There does not seem to be my restrictions for purchasing or ownership of foreign property here in Uruguay. You do not need to be a citizen or resident to a purchase home or property, which makes the types of ownership diverse. However your pocketbook has to be a little deep as loans are not common and most large things purchased, including homes and land, need to be paid in full, or at least 2-3 installments within a year or so, depending on the compromiso written up by an escribana," remarked another expat in Coastal Uruguay, Uruguay.
