Moving to Melbourne

Me and my my wife and young son currently live in York England. We are in the early stages of possibly moving to Australia. We would appreciate any information that anyone could give us especially relating to house prices in Melbourne. For example how much would a family home approx. cost. What is the work situation like ?
My wife works in Financial Services. I work in construction. (Planning office manager) my work involves Autocad design and a high level of I.T. including SAP. I am a qualified joiner by trade.
