Saudi Arabia Travel Warning

Warden Message 1

The Embassy has received reports of attacks against several residential compounds in the Riyadh area beginning at approximately 11:00 PM on May 12. We have some reports at this time of casualties.

Saudi security forces are responding to the attacks and have been asked to take the appropriate measures to protect all other sites in the Kingdom where Americans reside. The Embassy advises American citizens to remain at home, to keep away from all windows and doors, and to keep cellular phones charged and available.

The Embassy is assessing the situation and will provide updated information when available. Americans resident in Riyadh with information on casualties and damages at their compounds are asked to call the American Embassy at 488-3800, ext. 1124 and 1129.

Warden Message 2

The Embassy wishes to advise the American community that the Embassy and the Consulates General will be closed to the public except for emergency services for American citizens on May 13, 2003. In addition, Mission dependent children will not be attending school on May 13. Mission personnel have been instructed to stay home except for essential official business.

In light of last night's terrorist attacks, the Embassy strongly advises American citizens in the Kingdom to use extreme caution and to remain vigilant. The Department of State's May 1, 2003 Travel Warning for Saudi Arabia, disseminated as Warden Message #21/2003, warned American citizens to defer non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia. It further counseled that private Americans currently in Saudi Arabia should evaluate their own security situations, and should consider departing Saudi Arabia.
