Jordan Public Announcement
Issued by US Department of State
Apr 13, 2004
This Public Announcement is being issued to apprise U.S. citizens of the Department's concern regarding the security situation in Jordan. This Public Announcement expires on July 7, 2004.
The Government of Jordan recently announced that it took steps against a terrorist cell, which had targeted several Government of Jordan facilities. The U.S. Department of State was informed that subsequent information indicates the U.S. Embassy in Amman was also a target. This development is a reminder that terrorist groups, including
al-Qaida, continue to prepare to strike U.S. interests abroad. Terrorists do not distinguish between official and civilian targets. These may include facilities where U.S. citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, including residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels and public areas. U.S. citizens are encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to safeguard their security, and increase their security awareness.
U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Jordan are strongly encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy via e-mail at [email protected] or in person at the Embassy, which is located on Al-Umawiyeen Street, Abdoun, Amman. The telephone number is (6) 592-0101 and the fax number is 592-4102. The after-hours emergency telephone number is (6) 592-0120. The U.S. Embassy workweek is Sunday through Thursday. Current information on travel and security in Jordan may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States, or, from overseas, 1-317-472-2328. U.S. citizens should consult the Consular Information Sheet for Jordan, the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement, and the latest Worldwide Caution Public Announcement at the Department's Internet site at http://travel.state.gov.
