Central African Republic Travel Warning
Issued by U.S. State Department
Nov 08, 2001
The Department of State warns U.S. citizens to defer travel to the Central African Republic. The security situation in Bangui remains uncertain following several days of shooting in suburban areas stemming from a standoff between government troops and forces loyal to the former Army Chief of Staff. The sporadic gunfire between the warring sides has ceased, with minimal casualties. The situation appears to have stabilized, but it is unclear whether it will remain so given the capital's unpredictable and often volatile political climate.
As always, U.S. citizens in Bangui should review their personal security situation and take those measures they deem appropriate to ensure their safety. The U.S. Embassy remains open for business.
