The heads of state and government of the European Union will be meeting as the European Council in Laeken, on the outskirts of Brussels on December 14 - 15, 2001. The Belgian federal police are taking steps to address the fact that local groups may be on hand in Brussels to demonstrate against globalization on December 14. Americans traveling to or residing in Brussels while the summit is in session should be vigilant in the presence of the demonstrators. They should avoid sites of demonstrations, if possible, bearing in mind that at previous international meetings, the demonstrations have sometimes turned violent.
