Issued by US Department of State
Dec 03, 2001
United States citizens should be aware that the Venezuelan Federation of Chambers of Commerce (FEDECAMARA) has called for a general strike on December 10. The Venezuelan Confederation of Workers (CTV) has said it will support this strike. The Embassy anticipates additional demonstrations and counter-demonstrations, including marches and work stoppages, throughout December. These events could affect medical services, public transportation, public order and general safety.
The international airport serving Caracas is approximately 45 minutes driving time from the city. The public strike planned for December 10 may affect available transportation to and from the airport. Airline service could be interrupted or delayed by airport workers supporting the work stoppage or unable to get to work due to lack of public transportation. Other Venezuelan airports may be similarly affected.
