Ghana Public Announcement
Issued by US Department of State
Apr 03, 2002
This Public Announcement is being issued to alert American citizens to the
potential for further violence following ethnic clashes in northern Ghana
and to urge that they avoid travel to the area. This Public Announcement
will expire on June 27, 2002.
On March 27, ethnic clashes in the Northern Region of Ghana resulted in an
undetermined number of deaths. While the most intense violence occurred in
the city of Yendi, Ghanaian authorities imposed curfews throughout the
region, and troops are in place to restore and maintain peace. Americans
are urged to avoid unnecessary travel to the region until the situation
improves. Those who do travel there should check with the U.S. Embassy in
Ghana for updated information on safety and security.
All American citizens in Ghana are reminded to register with the U.S.
Embassy, located on Ring Road East, P.O. Box 194, Accra, telephone (233-21)
775-347 or 48; fax number (233-21) 701-1813. The Embassy maintains a home
