This Public Announcement is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to the
continued potential for terrorist activity by Sendero Luminoso and other
groups in Peru, in the weeks leading up to and following May 17, an
important anniversary for these groups. This Public Announcement extends
the Public Announcement of March 21, 2002 and expires July 24, 2002.
There are indications that terrorist organizations are continuing to plan
actions directed against American citizens and American interests in Peru.
American citizens are advised to be vigilant and avoid crowds and public
areas, particularly those areas where Americans are known to congregate.
These organizations are known to plan activities on or around significant
anniversary dates for these groups in May.
Peruvian authorities continue increased security at the U.S. Embassy and
U.S.-affiliated facilities. The U.S. Embassy remains open to the public but
may close from time to time to review its security posture. American
citizens seeking non-emergency services should contact the Embassy at (51-1)
434-3000 before visiting in person to ensure the Embassy is open for
business. In addition, the public should avoid demonstrations or places
where large crowds are known to gather. American citizen visitors and
