Denmark Public Announcement

Issued by US Department of State

Dec 09, 2002

This public announcement is being issued to alert American citizens to the potential for violent confrontations between anti-globalization demonstrators and police on the margins of the European Union (EU) summit scheduled to begin December 12, 2002, in Copenhagen. This public announcement will expire on December 20, 2002.

American citizens should exercise caution in Copenhagen before and during the meeting of the European Council, which will be attended by many heads of government and senior government officials of EU member and candidate states. The summit is scheduled for December 12-13, 2002; however, negotiations could last into the weekend. Large numbers of well-organized demonstrators reportedly may attempt to disrupt the meetings or commit acts of vandalism. Some anti-globalization demonstrations on the margins of similar international summits have turned into violent confrontations between demonstrators and the police.

Danish officials are taking extensive security precautions. Access to certain areas of Copenhagen may be restricted. Additional airport and border-crossing controls will be in effect, with individuals and vehicles subject to search.

American citizens in the Copenhagen area should maintain a low profile, be aware of their surroundings at all times, and avoid demonstrations. Please check the security section of Embassy Copenhagen's home page at www.usembassy.dk for information on known demonstrations that are scheduled to take place during the European Council meeting.

The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen is located at Dag Hammarskjolds Alle 24, and can be reached during business hours at 45 35 55 31 44 and after hours at 45 35 55 92 70 in connection with emergencies such as the arrest, serious injury, or death of a U.S. citizen.

Americans should closely monitor the Department's Internet site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution/Public Announcement can be found. For further general information on travel to Denmark, please consult the Department's latest Consular Information Sheet at this site.
