Turkmenistan Travel Warning

This Public Announcement alerts Americans to security concerns following the
November 25 attack on the motorcade of the President of Turkmenistan. This
Public Announcement expires on March 28, 2003.
U.S. citizens are advised to carefully evaluate travel to Turkmenistan at
this time. There is currently a heightened state of security in
Turkmenistan. Police have conducted widespread questioning, home searches,
and car searches. Security personnel have set up checkpoints on major
roads. U.S. citizens are strongly advised to ensure they have complied with
Turkmenistan's visa and registration requirements and to carry their
passports with them at all times. Americans in Turkmenistan should exercise
due caution and maintain a strong security posture by remaining aware of
U.S. citizens are encouraged to register and obtain updated security
information at the U.S. Embassy in Ashgabat. The Embassy is located in
