Expat Advice: Culture Shock in New Providence, Bahamas

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

New Providence

If they speak another language in your new country, do you speak the language? If yes, did you learn the language before you moved or while abroad? If no, are you planning to learn the language?

Learning the language of a country is very important, especially if you are travelling there or living there on a permanent basis. Being able to communicate with locals in their own language allows you to integrate more easily and enables you to experience the culture and engage with people in a positive and meaningful way. It also opens up more job opportunities and allows for better interaction with the environment. In addition, it can make the transition to a new country much easier, as it aids the process of understanding unfamiliar customs and behaviours. Furthermore, language is key to unlocking literature and music from that culture, offering greater insight and appreciation of the culture.
