Hello everyone. I am an American woman who wants to marry my Algerian man, but every turn is an obstacle. It is incredibly hard to get the right information. I am hearing that I need to bring a birth certificate which is less than 20 days old!!. By the time you actually get to Algeria, it could be more than 20 days. The problems goes on and on. I hope to go to Tunisia to marry because I heard that the process is easier, but so much red tape.
Honestly, if you really want to get married and it's top on your priority list, you will just go through the process. Yes, it's time consuming but doable. Be prepared, to have your documents translated into French, and to have to visit the agencies once or twice a week. Their hours are not convenient, but that's how Algeria works. Also no Imam will perform Nikkah without your family book (government marriage license). If you plan on marrying during Ramadan be prepared for an even longer wait. Marrying in Algeria is not a quick nor easy feat but if your fiance really is serious about marrying he will get everything done. InshaAllah your marriage is easy for you.
The reason it is so difficult is because nothing is consistent in Algeria. I suggest you get your fiance to go to his police station in his Wilaya and ask. I have even heard stories of how the Tunisian marriage was not accepted after they travel there to do it. There are immigration offices in police stations that help with your residency and visa issues. They are probably the best to ask because it all comes down to them if you get to stay there or not.
