1st step

My wife and I have been considering a move to Argentina for a year and the decide if we want to make a permanent move. My question is this: would it be best to go on a three month visa and apply for residency in Buenos Aires or make an appointment with the Argentine embassy here in the US first. Any advice will be much appreciated. BTW, neither of us speak any Spanish. We do plan on starting courses soon, however, we do not expect this to be a fast process and I believe the only way to truly learn a language is to be immersed in the culture.
Thanks
