teaching in Bermuda

Hello everyone,

I have a job offer to teach middle school (grades 6,7, and 8) in Bermuda. The salary offer is $75,500. Housing will be covered if it goes beyond 25% of my salary (typically about $1800 a month). There are a number of deductions (pension, tax, etc.), which I think would amount to another $800 or so a month.
Here is my dilemma: would I be tight for cash? Would there be anything left to send home to my family at the end of the month? Would I be able to have a 'life' in Bermuda on what remains? Also, does anyone have any experience in the teaching business? I have only a few days to decide and I am perplexed? My wife would like to visit as would a collection of friends but I believe there are restrictions on family/friends visiting. And, would one go stir-crazy on this small island (e. g. I love NYC).
Thanks to all that offer information.

Hi. What school is making the offer? Might make a difference in atmosphere. I work as a reading tutor, so I know several of the schools. You could make due on the salary you mention, but you will have to tighten your belt if you also want to send money home. Housing costs are very high, but many people live a happy life especially if sports and beach life appeals to you. As far as getting off the island to avoid island-fever - it is important. Flights to NYC cost around $400 round trip (sometimes more, sometimes a bit less on sale). My family is going to Boston for this upcoming long weekend just to get away. Shouldn't be a problem with having friends and family visit; the max time immigration wants visitors to stay is 21 days, but otherwise the government is thrilled to have more visitors. Good luck with your decision.
