Customs Duties on personal items

Dear all, I read on a website that you are only allowed to bring $100 of goods into Bermuda, and anything over you pay a duty of 35%.

I understood that this is applicable to even personal items, such as cell phones, laptops, and in my case an electric guitar with some equipment.

Does anyone know if this is the case? And if so, how do you get around this?

Thanks and I appreciate everyones help on these newby questions.

Steve

When you get to Bermuda, you will be given a form called a 'Certificate of Transfer of Residence' (assuming you have a valid work permit).

The clock starts ticking from this date ... you have 90 days from then to get your stuff into Bermuda. When the stuff arrives in Bermuda, your local shipping agent uses the above form to get the stuff through Customs.

Regardless of this, if any of your items are less than six months old, you are still liable for tax on them.

You have 90 days grace when you move here to bring your belongings over.. after 3 months when you fly into bermuda you are allowed to bring in 200.00 after that you pay 25% duty on it. Also when you have items shipped in,, there is a different charge depending on what you order... Most of it is 25% - Books are free from duty but there is a 5.00 charge at the Post office for every parcel brought in.. You can only recieve 30.00 per month of gifts

"Most of it is 25% ..." – do you know whether there is a list somewhere which describes the different rates and what they apply to?
