keep US internet job?

If I'm a spouse of the work permit holder, can I work from home on the internet (for a US based company) in Bermuda? It seems you cannot get a permit issued to a non-Bermudian company, but it doesn't make sense that I couldn't work from home (I do online software tech support). Is there any way around this? This is a great opportunity for my wife's career, but we cannot live there without my salary helping out...

My expectation would be that this is OK. The work permit system is in place to help ensure that Bermudians are first in line for local jobs. Your US-based position brings money into the country without affecting locals' employment chances & therefore sounds fine to me. However, I am no expert & would suggest that you contact the government immigration department for confirmation (https://www.gov.bm/coming-bermuda/immigration).

If you do find out, please post back here, as I am sure that others would be interested to know.

Dear Salamander:

I was in a similar situation. I had a job on Bermuda and my husband wanted to trade via the internet. On-line or virtual work is permissible.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the replies. Finally received an answer from the immigration office: If I am a dependent on my wife's work permit, and I am working remotely with NO interaction with Bermudians (ie, the moment my company receives a Bermudian client I would need a work permit), then you do NOT need a permit to work from home. My company may request and file the dependent paperwork from my wife's company. Hope this helps someone else!

That's good news for you.

I'm sure you're aware, but just in case ... I suggest you divide your US salary by 3 to get an idea of how much buying power it will have once you are in Bermuda, compared with what you have now.
