Likelihood of partner getting job

Hi all,

I am a female physiotherapist from the UK currently going through the very lengthy HR process of being accepted to work for the Bermudan Government.

My partner is going to be living in Bermuda with me, and would obviously want to be working while out there.

What is the likelyhood of him finding work while we are on the island? He is currently Head of Learning and Development for a London based company, and will have a permit to work based on my work permit (if I have done my research correctly!)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello and welcome (in advance) to Bermuda.

I know what you mean about the lengthy work-permit process!

I suspect that your partner will have is something called 'permission to seek employment', which is different from a work permit. What this means is that he will be able to apply for positions advertised locally while resident in Bermuda. And that is all that it means.

If he is accepted for any of these positions, he will have to go through the same lengthy work-permit application process you are going through right now. It's not going to be easy and he should be prepared for a long 'holiday'. As you will already know, locals get preferential treatment when it comes to jobs here and any company which hires him will have to prove that there are no suitable Bermudian candidates before the application will be accepted by immigration.

Good luck.

Hello and thank you @BigPhil for the advice. I didn't realise the difference between the two work permits (or maybe it was wishful ignorance!), but that makes sense.

It seems there are a lot of hurdles to jump to get to Bermuda, and then again once you are there, but I am hoping the patience and determination will pay off :)

Thanks again for the advice!

Glad to help. It all pays off in the end (as long as you've negotiated yourself a large enough salary!)

Post again or send me a message if you have any more questions & I'll do my best to help.

Dear Natbox:

It is illegal to look for a job on the island. All work must be secured prior to arriving with work permits already issued. Also, it is illegal to change jobs or to work AZ second job. You are at the mercy of your employer. Should your existing position not work out, and should you want to remain in Bermuda, you will need to leave Bermuda, look for a job in Bermuda while living outside Bermuda, and start the work permit and immigration process all over again.

The only way to avoid this is for your partner to secure n on line or virtual job.

Best of luck! After 6 months of near starvation and pseudo homelessness, I returned to the States.

Dear Skater

I do not think that everything in your message is necessarily correct.

A partner can be covered by a work permit in such a way that the partner is entitled to seek employment while they are here. This is not illegal, as long as such permission is mentioned in their immigration documents.

Phil
