Working in Bermuda

Hi all,

I am a female Corporate Administrator moving from Ireland and currently going through the visa process with my employer.

Obviously myself and my boyfriend are very excited about moving over. He is going to be living in Bermuda with me, and would obviously want to be working while out there. We are applying for him to have permission to look for work while living in Bermuda with me.

However, what is the likelihood of him finding work in the area of construction? we have applied directly to a few companies that are located in Bermuda but have not seen any jobs advertised. Is construction work available in Bermuda?

From what I've read on line - it seems to be a bad idea for him to move over with me until he has found a job as he will have to go through the visa process and won't be working while living there until he receives his own visa.

Any advice on what we should do would be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

Congratulations on your new job.

Your assessment of options is fairly accurate. If your boyfriend does not have 'permission to seek' by virtue of your permit, he will not be getting a job, any job, while he is in Bermuda.

If you do get permission to seek, I would still advise against him coming here and trying to find employment. Unless you are an experienced actuary, accountant or IT professional, getting a job while here is extremely challenging, and while he is here you will have to pay expenses for both (rent, food, entertainment etc) – quite a burden.

The option of him remaining in Ireland and applying while you move to Bermuda is probably the one with the most chance of success, unappealing as that may sound. Without wishing to sound pessimistic, I suggest that you consider a back-up plan if you decide on this option. If your boyfriend is unable to find employment after x years/months, what will you do?

Phil

Hi Phil,

Thank you very much for your response. Yes, I agree and we are currently trying to consider back up options just in case he can't find work in Bermuda, he may have to locate somewhere closer to Bermuda. But hopefully everything will work out!

Hello. I agree with Phil. I worked at starvation wages in Bermuda as a Pilates instructor (I was greatly misinformed) while my husband stayed in the States.

The one time he visited me, he had "talks"; not "interviews" scheduled as it is illegal to look for work. My husband has 30 years of finance experience and while job prospects looked promising, no offers were forthcoming. This was two years ago, and Bermuda has cracked down on immigration and ex-pat employment even more, or maybe that is just for Americans.

My suggestion is to accept the job in Bermuda, find out if you like living on the island, and assess from there.

I eventually, and gratefully,
returned home and my husband and I are still together.

Bermuda us incredibly expensive. Go first, without the boyfriend. Love will prevail. Good luck, Kelley
