Can I buy a vehicle without an RUT?

I made it safe to Valdivia and have my new rental cabaña. My friend has been a complete gift, but he has limited time. Is it possible for me to buy a used vehicle before I have an RUT, so I can go shopping and work the residency process on my own? Because I think with a vehicle the whole process will go much easier and faster. I just want to make sure I can do that.

OIC. I need to get the RUT first. Then I can buy the car. http://practicingforretirement.com/index.php/buy-a-car-in-chile/

Buenos tardes

No.

You would not be able to transfer the vehicle to your name without a RUT and you can’t get insurance either, which is necessary as (most) people treat following the road rules as optional ajaja.

Unfortunately you don’t exist here without a RUT number.

Hi. We arrived in Chile on Fri 11 Feb (many years ago), and on Monday I went in to the nearest SII office (best one for foreigners is in Gen del Canto in Santiago) and got a TEMPORARY RUT (normally begins with 48.) Armed with this, I opened a bank account on Tuesday and had bought a new car by Wednesday, got motor insurance, Autopista TAG, etc. Go to SII Chile online, then look for "Contacto" - and you will see "Oficinas y Horarios". Go to that, and select Los Rios Region/Valdivia which will give you address of nearest SII office near you. Go see them, and ask for a Temp RUT. Normally, they would be expecting you to be in the process of getting a Temporary Residencia (up to 1 year), then "Residencia Definitiva". Your APPLICATION for Residencia Temporaria (using the temporary RUT) is then your AUTHORITY to stay in country longer than the "Tourist Visa (90 days)". WHEN you get your Temporary Residencia, this will have a NEW RUT - something like 23 or 24/25. now) and they will tell you WHEN you can apply for the Residencia Definitiva (normally at 9 month point after applying for Temp one!). WHEN you apply for the Residencia Definitiva, THIS application becomes your NEW authority to stay in country (not needing tourist visas), usually retaining the SAME RUT as came with Residencia Temporaria. Hope this helps. Go see them (sii); they are very helpful. Best of luck!!
