Travelseeker, the simplest and easiest way is to contact your nearest Chilean embassy, and follow their instructions. I hope that helps.

Lots of answers are on this forum, although not all of them are accurate. It was different for different people.
The most important info you will find at www.extranjeria.gob.cl at Visit Chile and Vivir en Chile. If you do not know Spanish you have to use translating dictionary, bit by bit. It is a lot of work but it is worth it.

Travelseeker, By "bit by bit" I did not mean "word by word". That will be a pain. I meant "groups of sentences". Under " www.extranjeria.gob.cl look for "Vivir en Chile" . There you will find "Visa temporaria" which is the first step towards residency. Under it you will find 12 categories of Visa temporaria. See which one is right for you and continue to get info about it.

Thanks for the encouraging opinion. I understand that each person has a totally different situation, nationality, job, family etc. etc. There is no one universal answer to the question.

Before you apply for anything live in Chile few months and then, if you really liked start the process.
I explore Chile 6 months before I start the residence process, lots of pros and cons, everybody is deferent and perceive things different.
if you like city life, noise and pollution stay in Santiago, if you want same noise with less pollution, near the ocean explore Vina or Valparaiso. If you want farming, clean air and water go south, stay in Maule region if you want to grow food thru the year.
Im planting almost 3000 fruit trees, herb garden and greens, all organic.

There is no real need for an immigration attorney in Chile unless you enter illegally or try to use forged documents.
To get a "Visa de Pensionado" all you need is a certificate from the US consulate in Santiago plus the usual copies off course (Passport, Pictures, etc) This Visa is not available abroad, only in Chile.
Appliying for a Temporary Visa does NOT obligate you to live in Chile, it is a better deal to apply first and decide later. Especially if the new Immigration Bill passes, you may have to live the country to get a Temporary visa. Best Walt

Only visited Vina del Mar once almost 1 and a half months ago. I loved the scenery along the coastline, but the hilly landscaping seemed a bit of a challenge. Valpariso was beautiful but seemed a little bit to remote for my liking. It's very difficult to make an educated opinion of any specific region.
