R visa requirements

So I will be applying for my second M visa (marriage related) in October. Assuming they issue it prior to the first one expiring I will have my three years needed in order to qualify for the R visa. Five days after the first M visa expires and assuming they issue the second one so that it over laps I will have my three years needed for the R visa.
My question is will they hold my time outside the country against me. The time I have spent in country could have been accomplished as a tourist. I will spend the fifty bucks and simply apply when the time comes. I am just curious if anyone has had experience with this situation?
Regards,
elp
