De la Espriella the far right candidate is an interesting character. For one thing he is a multimillionaire (in dollars) with both Italian and US passports as well as Colombian and a mansion in Corral Gables Florida. He and family have permanent US residency. In addition to his extremely remuniterive Colombia/US law practise he has side businesses including a mens fashion line and a brand of rum. Among his accomplishments he defended (ror a few months) Davíd Murcia who was behind the enormously successful pyramid scheme DMG . The scheme cheated thousands of Colombians out of their money and created enormous wealth for Murcia that he used for purchasing yachts, private jets and Lamborghinis before he was caught in 2008. DMG actually reached 1,2% of Colombia's gross national product. Abelardo was his defense attorney for three months until he suddenly dropped Murcia like a hot potato claiming he found a second set of books for the DMG operation. Interestingly Murcia now accuses him of lawyerly malpractice and stealing five billion pesos in fees never applied to Murcia's defense. De la Espriella faces a court appearance on June 5th following the first election round to address the accusation. There is also a fascinating scandle regarding his defence in 2018 of Alex Saab, accused of money laundering for Nicolás Maduro. Prior to a massive US assisted raid in Barranquilla to capture Saab De la Espriella's law office was tipped off and Saab was long gone when the raid took place.

Abelardo has a fifteen year old daughter who lives in the Corral Gables mansion and attends an elite private school in Miami. Should he win she will have to give up her friends and cushy life in balmy Florida and move to chilly friendless Bogotá. Poor dear.
