Yesterday De la Espreilla issued a directive ordering joint operations between national police and Colombia Migration to track down and deport all undocumented foreigners beginning of course with those who have committed crimes. This is a drastic change from both the right wing Duque and left wing Petro administrations which were both relatively tolerant of Venezuelan immigration.. There are an estimated 800,000 Venezuelans without regularized immigration status in the country. Interestingly Colombian law classifies migration status issues as administrative infractions rather than criminal offenses unlike illegal immigration in the US. Its questionable whether Migracion Colombia (which has been battling labor issues) has the staff to handle this new directive. Will the new president create an "ICE" Colombia?
