Had a serious stroke in January 23 and I've finally decided to permanently leave the United States. I've picked Quepos because it is close to the park and a nice mellow night life (compared to say Jaco) and I'm taking up some new hobbies.

I am strongly considering purchasing a home with rental potential, i.e. cabinas, small hotel, apartment building or a compound near Uvita. We have visited many times and I usually base myself at Vista Ballina, because that view is heaven and so is the service. My preferred altitude is about 300 - 400 m elevation. If there is anyone who has made this journey, I sure could use some frank answers. Simple things come to mind: maintaining or structuring a road to 2-wheel drive access, reliable telecommunications, dependable mail service, etc. Just anyone to chat with would be a God send. I may have to open a clothing store because beach boho isn't for everyone, and I am definitely in that category. Be well, be happy, let's talk.

Hola,
You asked about the La Fortuna area, which I lived for about 1 year. This included the lake Arenal area as well. To begin, I am in my mid 60;s but shy away from most people in my age group and associate with the younger, mid 50's down crowd, So my experiences in this area are slanted in that direction, A person must have a deep appreciation for natural settings and beauty to truly get the most of the area. Also be prepared to receive the most rain you may have ever encountered living anywhere. That is one of the reasons I left,,yet still go back to visit in short durations. If your income is prosperous, then you can enjoy the spas , hot springs, resort amenities throughout the area, which are many. Everyone I knew had some form of transportation, because most attractions and restaurants are scattered over many kms. La Fortuna itself is heavily visited with tourism and weekend getaways. So it is not a quiet place in general. The area surrounding Lake Arenal offers more peaceful settings and a more established ex pat environment. But it can get boring because of the distance between locations for anything. Only one narrow road around the entire lake. This area is about hrs to Liberia airport, and two hours to the ocean. So it offers some better conveniences than La Fortuna. Hope this assists you, if visiting go in the rainy season to see if you could handle the weather.

Hello, griffonet, I have been thinking of the La Fortuna area. What did you think of it when you were living there?

I am an older widow who is interested in selling my home in the US and moving to a slower paced, more healthy environment for my retirement. I plan to retire in 6-8 years. I'm very diligent in researching any endeavor I take on, so I'm just starting my research in hopes I will have a place to go by the time I retire and have my financial status set for my retirement.

I grew up in the states and have spent most of my time in Tennessee. A little bit of time in Colorado, Indiana, Ohio as well. I have been considering a move back out west to CO, Wyoming, or Montana. But with the growing tension in the US, it may just be time to move on. I took a trip to Costa Rica in 2019 with 3 friends, we covered as much ground as you could in 7 days. It’s one of my favorite experiences of my 42 years. With a little creativity and planning, I would love to make Costa Rica home.

I have retired from my business in 2019 but couldn't; t leave the states until 2021. After trying to live in 4 countries, settled in Costa Rica and been here for almost 2 years in June. Explored living in Lake Arenal and La Fortuna areas as well as San Isidro De General region. Visited various locations on the peninsula, the southwest coast and different areas around the central valley. Now will be moving to Atenas to feel what that area is like..

HI,
I am Claude. I live in Quebec Canada. i am a Gemini ascending Aquarius in my 70s. I am an astrologer and my wife is a retired eastetician. We are considering and slowly preparing to move to Costa Rica.
i am attracted to "Arenal" area.
i would like to be contacted by someone of the Arenal community expat if possible.
My wish would be to rent, and from that point be on the look out for a place to buy.
My persisting childhood dream is to live in a place that has an absolute stunning view but my means are only medium.

Please get back to me.

My wife Holly and I are going to be retiring July 2025 at 63 and have been looking at the Pacific side of Costa Rica, mostly at Tamarindo and Jaco as well as other options. We love the idea of living in the tropics, close to a beach, diving and sailing.

Grandiose plans but we'll likely be on fixed income just over $4K per month. So we're beginning to look around and plan to rent. A community where we could get by with a golf cart for most things, have decent healthcare with bus transportation available would be ideal.

Paul and Gillian S. Ontario, Canada.

We emigrated to Canada 50 years ago and for the most part it has been a very
good life but the economic climate has changed drastically and we want out to keep a hold on what we worked hard for, the government here prefer to take care of drug addicts more than hard working tax paying people and pensioners.

We are a close knit family of 5 consisting of both of us aged 77 yrs old and 1 son of 46, 1 daughter aged 44 and our granddaughter who is 17.
Costa Rica is our first choice because of the bio diversity and warmer climate, also the slower pace of life. We are interested in Uvita and Ojochol at present and are planning a couple of trips to scope out areas that interest us.

Hello
I am approaching retirement and considering moving from Arizona to Costa Rica and possibly Guatemala. I am a distance online teacher and writer in anthropology and the natural sciences. Hope to enrich my courses and writings by living more closely with the biodiversity found in Central America. Thinking of Atena Costa Rica---hoping to find some advisement in this forum!
