Hi Rov! Congratulations on your job offer in Nuremburg. It really is a lovely city, with lots to offer. I have heard about an International School in Nuremburg for your city. I will check into it for you, if you would like. As far as learning the German language, I would strongly recommend it. If you are with the Military, it wouldn't be that important to be fluent in the language, since you would be provided with all the comforts of home (your own grocery stores, services, ect...). There are some English-speaking people around, but not that many as some might think. Your life will definitely be much easier if you had some knowledge of the language. You don't have to be 100 percent fluent, but you should know enough to get you by with shopping, ect.....Also, by learning the language, your transition into German society will be much easier - making new friends, ect.......The Germans appreciate it very very much if you make an attempt to learn their language. If you do decide that you want to take a German course, I would strongly recomment Inlingua. I have known people who have taken their courses, and judging by their fluency in the German language, they seem to know what they are doing! They offer courses in Nuremburg. In the meantime, I will check around for an International School for you, if you would like. If you have any further concerns, or if I can be of further assistance to you, please don't hesitate to email me at [email protected]. Viele Grüße aus Deutschland! Tanya p.s. You are going to love the food out here!!!

Hi rov,
See my reply to 'help in Nuernburg" and the web site chronicling our adventures living as expats there from 1999-2000. It's at http://members.home.com/smengels/de/ There's also a list of useful links for the city, transportation and Germany.
Unlike the larger cities, such as Munich, Frankfurt, etc., Nuernberg is very German and language can be a problem. However, most people speak some English because it is required in Gymnasium (that's high school auf Deutsche). Getting my haircut was always an adventure with my broken German and the hairstylist's high school English -- quite amusing at times, but I always got an excellent haircut because stylists must go to school & be certified. Doctors are a different story. All physicians read English, but speaking is another story. I found it very difficult at times and had to ask my company's onsite nurse to help translate on several occasions.
Learning German is a good way to learn the culture. Even if all you learn is "tourist German", like we did, it will make the experience far richer.
It's a lovely medieval but modern city. Have you visited yet? We lived in the city, near the castle. We miss shopping in the Hauptmarkt of the Altstadt.
Viel gluck.

You will love living in Nuremburg. I currently live just north of Nuremburg and we love it here. We have been here 1-1/2 years. We moved here from Cleveland, Ohio. There is an international school here. It is only about 3 years old and currently has grades K - 5. Each year they add a grade. The school is currently located in Herzogenaurach. There is a large poplulation of international families in this area who work with Addidias and Siemens however there are also many other companies with internationals as well. I do not speak much German and do not find it difficult to get by. However my husband did need to learn the language for work.
You can find out more about the Franconian International School and the town of Herzogenaurach at the website www.ecis.org/fis.
If I can help answer any other questions for you about the area please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].
Good Luck Theresa
