Gardening

Is it just me or do Germans like to garden like crazy? I live in a rural area and it seems like almost everybody here gardens. They grow tomatoes, cucumbers, zuchini, beans, flowers, strawberries, apples, cherries, walnuts and everything else they can get their hands on or that will grow in this area. I'm not complaining. I think it's a very good thing to have fresh vegetables from your own garden but it seems like alot of work. These people are out there everyday (except Sunday of course) for hours pulling weeds, turning the soil and everything. The neighbors are very nice and give me tomatoes, cucumbers and apple jam sometimes. I'm a stay-at-home mom and I feel like they look at me as a lazy American who does nothing all day and doesn't take care of the yard or can't grow a garden. I'm a city girl from San Francisco and have never had a garden in my life. I feel left out, like I should have a garden too but I don't know where to start. I can barely keep my house plants alive. If I look for gardening books they're all in German. I wanted to know do any of you garden? What do you grow, vegetables or just flowers? Do you know any books in English that tell you what grows here and how to go about it? Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!
