German Train pass or Eurail Global pass

Hello. For 22-day travel through Germany, Poland, Amsterdam, France, Czech Republic and Italy, would you recommend using a German rail pass, Eurail Global pass, simply renting a car for free style travel or combination of both?

My spouse and oldest son are flying into Amsterdam early March 2018, flying out of Frankfurt Germany 22 days later.

Mainly WWII historical locations trip.

Please comment on your thoughts for ease and freedom of travel from personal experience or from shared experiences from others doing similar travel.
