Hello everyone. I’m married to a Guatemalan citizen in the US. I know that’s not a recognized status in Guatemala, but I thought I’d get that out of the way. We have been together for over 30 years and I expect we’ve traveled there at least 30 times so far. We have always planned to move to Guatemala when my husband retires here in the US. That time will be August 2022.

As that time is fast approaching we are beginning to develop a budget for the move.

Fortunately, we already own a five bedroom home in a gated community in Guatemala City, so we are fairly confident that we have living cost at zero $ on that.

His family is well established and owns a hospital (american standards.). Also, several doctors and lawyers in the family to help with health and legal issues.

We are shipping our car there as it’s a huge price difference from buying a new car there.

We have attorneys to help with the many legal obstacles.

We have started budgeting and I have it in an Excel format.

If you have experience with the cost of living could I send it to someone who can tell me if it is realistic.

Also, I understand we need to open an account with an established bank to where we can transfer dollars from our US banks and withdraw Quetzals locally. Since my husband is a citizen I don’t think there should be a problem doing that. But, what do I need in order to be a co-owner on a Guatemala bank account.

As for time limits on being in the country we have an attorney locally we plan on using. He’s a family member so we trust him.

We feel like we have a good budget now but would like someone currently in Guatemala City to review it and suggest updates. Can anyone contact me by email so I can reply with a copy of the budget and get an opinion if it’s reasonable.

My email is:

Hello. My name is Roberto. Actually I am an expat born Guatemala who has lived in the US since I was 3. I will now be splitting my time between US and Guatemala. I am building a home 10 minutes from Antigua which I hope will be completed by August 2021.

I am a photographer and photography/photoshop instructor and will be able to carry on with my work for architectural firms during my months in Guatemala.

Hi Rodd where do you have land picked out at? We've driven all over Mexico and Guatemala with COVID it's a bit more weird but otherwise we never had issues

there's a lot , maybe 1/2 acre size, next to mine that's ocean view (across the narrow dirt road, with NOTHING on the beach itself to obstruct a view) in sleepy little Esquintla dept. town of Tecojate.. just a guess the price should be no more than Q50,000. I was there less than a week ago.

you should consider helping me build my house in ocean front Tecojate.. there's an ocean-view lot right next to mine that I believe could be bought.

hello. I went to Tecojate , middle Pacific Ocean coast, for 1st time in 2012. went back again in 2017. met a 23 yr old guy who spoke pretty good Eng. name is Tony. he invited to stay at "his" house. turns out it was the whole family's house. stayed 3 nights. treated ROYALLY. went back in 2019. saw Tony, mentioned I'd like to live there at least during NOV< DEC< JAN< FEB when it's cold back home. he showed me places I might could buy. went back in late 2019 and secured a lot on road across from ocean, about 1km away from town proper. am going to build a house there.
