concerned about life in kuwait

My son is considering taking a 5 year contract job in Kuwait. My husband and I would accompany him, along with his wife and one year old. I am concerned about safety, difficulties living there as an American woman, logistical problems, and the expat community. How many Americans are currently living in Kuwait, not counting the military? Is there truly no alcohol? How restricted are foreign women in the city?
