Learning Arabic

Hi There, I'm a Brit, but my french is now pretty much as good as the average berber or arab marrakchi: in fact most people refuse to believe I AM a Brit!
I am considering staring to learn arabic now, but almost everyone I know who has tried, even people who already speak several languages, have all said that arabic is a really difficult language to learn & that most arabs are pretty anti foreigners learning their language & so are not prepared to be either patient or helpful with 'new learners'.
Is there anyone out there who has learned enough arabic from base zero to be able to have a conversation in a cafe or shop, please, & how long did it take you to get to that level of proficiency?
