Import oldtimer car from Europe into US

We are moving to the US for at least 2 years around March 2018. We own an old-timer car (year built 1968) and I would like to bring it with me. I found lots of information on the internet, but not all. There are limitations for the time the car is allowed to be in the US if you will not become a permanent resident (like only 90 days). Can someone inform me if it is possible to have the car imported for the time we will be staying in the US? At least 2 years, but it can be longer. We will have L1 and L2 visa's.

Hi. There are speciality car shipping companies who will have all this kind of info, i was going to import my 200mph Supra until i found out its ground clearance was too low to go over concrete water channels etc. Good luck.

My understanding is the car will have to go through a compliance process to make sure that it complies with applicable emission and safety regulations

Kats thats not true for certain old or vintage cars, especially if its for resticted use, how do you think model T's get driven around.

any motor vehicle 25 days or older is 100% except from any regulations , i.e. Smog, DOT-

You may bring in no problem and no tax - If you would like a contact to a retired US Customs agent I can provide - its a simple process as long as vehicle is 25 years or older -

Meanwhile all went fine. Car made it to California and is imported. No major DMV issues. Driving with it regularly.
