Panama vs. The Dominican Republic

My wife and I are travelling to Panama very soon for a week to have an initial "look-see" for retirement purposes. We are also looking at the DR as a possibility BUT we've never been to either country...yet. Has anyone considered both, and if so, why did you settle on Panama? I'm not sure we're Boca, David type people or exactly what at this point. Any information you can share would so greatly appreciated. For those of you that initiated this forum, thank you. Extremely useful, and thanks for any response you can share.
