Taxis In Panama

Hi guys,
I have heard lots of bad experiences with these, and I wondered what were your thoughts - and if you consider them safe for someone that doesn't speak a word of Spanish.

Also, do you know of a reputable Taxi Company or individual that speaks English that I could use - I don't mind paying a little extra if I am safe.

Thanks in advance!

By in large, taxi drivers do not speak English in Panama City except for some of the older ones who used to do business at the army bases. And I think all the taxis are privately owned. I never had a problem. If you are concerned about a language barrier, try writing the address down.

We were down in Panama end of May beginning of June and stayed at the Balboa Inn. We walked down the street to Balboa Ave and hailed the taxi down. We were lucky to know how much we should be charged for where we were going. Neither of us speaks Spanish. We had no problems with the taxis at all. Where we were staying was off the beaten path and though we had a map, the drivers had a little trouble finding the Inn. Despite this we never had a driver change the agreed upon price. Word to the wise, agree on the price first and have the correct change. It is easier at times to use a piece of paper to write down where you are going. But have no fear, it is doable. Have fun and enjoy yourself.

PS we have traveled many, many places and have never really tried to get around on our own before and we were very comfortable doing it in Panama

I have your taxi driver! Roy Stahl, 6776-1066. He took me from Albrook mall to the American Embassy when other drivers refused...too far for $2. Speaks English and will even wait for you. Lived in States but is Panamanian. He will even give you guided tours. Call and he will be there. Will not overcharge because as he said I want to be the best taxi driver in Panama. And he is.
